HIV Home Test Kits: Review and Recommendations
Home HIV test kits have become increasingly popular, with their market share growing each year. This rise in popularity is largely due to the privacy these tests offer. Home test kits are available both online and in pharmacies, with several brands to choose from, such as OraQuick, Everlywell, myLAB BOX, and Verisana.
While researching online for online testing, I encountered some questionable results. For instance, Amazon lists some Chinese-made tests that claim to detect HIV using urine samples. As these products appear on the first page of search results, they likely have a customer base—but these are patently false as urine does not contain either viruses or antibodies. There are also several unbranded tests with unverifiable details. It is best to stick to well-known brands in such a sensitive matter.

OraQuick Test
OraQuick is the only true home test available. The other brands are more like home collection kits, where you collect a sample in the privacy of your home and send it to a lab for testing.
Approved by the FDA in 2012, OraQuick uses saliva, so there is no need for a finger prick. The test is fast, providing results in about 20 minutes, and costs around $30 on Amazon. It is highly accurate and FDA-verified. However, it is only an antibody test (not a combo test) and uses saliva, meaning the sensitivity is slightly lower. As such, it is most accurate after 90 days. That said, a test done at 45 days is also very reliable and reassuring, though a follow-up at 90 days is recommended for full confirmation.
Everlywell HIV Test
The Everlywell HIV test is a home collection kit rather than a true home test. You collect a blood sample using the materials provided and send it to a CLIA-certified lab using prepaid envelopes. Results are available in 5 to 7 days, either online or via post.
This is a combo antigen-antibody test, which offers more reliable information at 45 days and can even be done earlier. Prices can vary, reaching up to $70 depending on where it is purchased.
As the test uses a finger prick, it is advisable to confirm results with a lab-based test. However, it offers helpful and private information for those concerned about HIV transmission.

myLAB BOX is similar to the Everlywell kit, also offering a combo antigen-antibody test. It is slightly more expensive but offers faster results, within 1 to 5 days. There is also a subscription service for those wanting regular testing.
There is little difference between the Everlywell and myLAB BOX tests. If you need quicker results and don’t mind the extra cost, myLAB BOX may be a better option. If cost is a concern, Everlywell is more affordable.
Verisana HIV Test
The Verisana HIV test only checks for HIV antibodies (IgG and IgM) and does not test for the p24 antigen, meaning it is not a combo test. It costs about $65. I would not recommend this test over the other three mentioned above.
For those deeply concerned about privacy, home tests can be a tremendous relief. However, while these tests provide initial information, it is important to confirm any results with a full lab-based combo test at 45 days and again at 90 days for complete assurance.
Be sure to discuss with your doctor about any doubts about HIV including on testing procedures.
